If I get time, I can try to write up something more comprehensive, but for now here are my biggest tips on how to survive the Heigan dance. I went from consistently dying to almost never taking damage (aside from lag incidents) by modifying my behavior only slightly.
1
Start farther into the room than you think you need to. You want to be standing so that you are almost at where the lava will come up (but obviously not in it). In practice this means that if you are nervous about the lava walls and have been standing toward the back of the pack of people waiting to start the dance, don't. Move up to the front. It's easy to get worried and want to stand as far back as you can, but this will make you start the whole thing behind and will leave you with no margin for error.
2
Start moving early. Between latency and the time it takes for you to walk a few steps, you can make it safely to the next position if you start moving before the lava wave is gone. The lava wall will not damage you if you hit it while it's falling, so start moving as soon as you see it crest. [Ed: Thanks to Dmom for confirming this, see below] So don't push your luck, but stay ahead of the game by moving toward the falling wall as it's falling. You can always stop and restart again if you get too close too early. If you get behind, you will die.
3
Move just past where the last lava wall was. This is extremely easy to do if you are following hint #2.
4
As you approach the last wall, resist the temptation to run too far out to the wall. Treat it like any other wave and run just up to the position of the last wave front. The one big difference is that you should, without pausing, turn right around to face the opposite direction, giving you time to see the lava wall come up and fall down behind you. You are now in good position to start the whole thing over again from this side.
Additional, obvious general rules and general tips:
- Never use an ability with a cast time.
- If you aren't absolutely confident, don't worry about anything other than your own movement.
- Instant cast protective spells can be your friend. Mages use mana shield. Hopefully you won't take any damage, but even as an arcane mage, better that you loose a little mana if you should happen to do something slightly wrong than that you die. Make sure that such abilities are bound to a key so that you can cast them while moving with your mouse without stopping. Otherwise, forget it and just concentrate on your movement.
- Finally, if you are someone who normally keeps your camera zoomed way out for boss fights, you may find it helpful to zoom your camera in a little bit so that you can accurately judge where you are standing.
